Cyclists take to the streets of Khayelitsha to celebrate Transport Month

As part of the City’s National Transport Month programme, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate, in collaboration with Khaltsha Cycles; the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) and the Pedal Power Association (PPA), hosted a cycling awareness event today in Khayelitsha.
Under the City’s Transport month theme for this year, Road Safety – Share the Road Responsibly, the cycling event placed a strong focus on the safety of cyclists and the importance of mutual respect among all road users. This initiative aimed to highlight the daily challenges faced by cyclists on Cape Town’s roads and promote a culture of safer, more considerate behaviour.
Participants and community members joined the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, who was accompanied by the Provincial Minister of Mobility, Isaac Sileku, City officials and partners for a practical demonstration on how to share the road responsibly. Through a guided group ride, attendees experienced firsthand the importance of road awareness, visibility and responsible cycling behaviour.
Our host for the day, Mr Sindile Mavundla, Founder and Managing Director of Khaltsha Cycles, engaged with City officials to point out parts of the cycling route where the organisation has taken responsibility for maintaining the infrastructure. He emphasised that cycling is one of the best ways to keep Cape Town residents healthy, which in turn helps reduce the pressure on our hospitals and clinics.
‘As we continue to celebrate Transport Month, we are shining a spotlight on the safety of cyclists. Cyclists are among the most vulnerable road users and this year’s theme reminds us to respect cyclists on the road, while also encouraging cyclists to use hand signals, wear helmets and follow safe riding practices,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
This event demonstrated how road safety is best understood in practice. By taking to the streets on bicycles in real traffic conditions, brought the Transport Month message, Share the Road Responsibly, to life by demonstrating that safer roads require awareness and practical action from every road user.
‘Our partnerships with these organisations strengthen and amplify the message of sharing the road responsibly. These partners do excellent work in promoting cycling safety and awareness. By working together, our collective voice is stronger than if we act alone. We are ensuring that road safety is not just a City initiative, but a shared responsibility that affects every community and every road user in Cape town,’ said Quintas.
